The Bowman Gray Technical Center (BGTC) hosts approximately 250 scientists, product experts, and regulatory experts trained in a wide variety of disciplines. BGTC’s analytical testing labs are ISO 17025:2017 accredited, Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) compliant, and run >125 routine analytical methods in support of our regulatory submissions, product deployment activities, and manufacturing operations. Additional capabilities include a 140,000 square foot pilot plant and multiple product development labs.

Our Innovation Centre in Trieste hosts a new manufacturing site for our Smokeless Products, a digital boutique, innovation lab and centre of excellence for digital transformation and digital marketing. It is dedicated to research, development and production of Smokeless Products. The building is constructed to minimise its environmental impact with the objective of being carbon neutral, with a particular focus on energy efficiency and the use of renewable sources.

Brazil’s R&D Centre integrates multiple R&D functions in a single location, creating a perfect environment for synergies and innovation. The site proudly stands as the second-largest analytical capability laboratory in South America, providing services for BAT operations around the world. It houses extensive Analytical Services laboratories, Sensory, Flavour Development, Prototyping Hub, Data Management, Product Regulatory Compliance, Product and Packaging Development, as well as Global Leaf Agronomy that forges tools and strategies through Data Science for all R&D.

We believe the £30 million state-of-the-art facility will help accelerate development of our next generation Smokeless Products as we strive to achieve our vision of A Smokeless World™. Inside our new laboratories, colleagues will carry out research for:
- Oral Nicotine Pouches
- Liquids and flavours for Vapour Products
- Heated Products
- Wellbeing and Stimulation - Beyond Nicotine.
The Centre will also support work on packaging, engineering, innovation development and system integration.

Malang, Indonesia serves as a strategic hub within the global R&D network, bringing together capabilities across Combustibles, Smokeless Products, Packaging Innovations and Regulatory Compliance. The site operates as a highly integrated innovation centre, with teams supporting markets across the APMEA region. Its co-located Prototyping Hub enables agile, small-scale product testing, seamlessly complemented by advanced Analytical Services Laboratories that provide in-depth analysis and insights.

First established as a joint venture with BAT Operations, BAT R&D entered China in 2019 with a focus on establishing a technical hub for device development. Since 2019, the Shenzhen Innovation Centre has grown significantly and has a wide range of experts who have rich experience in mechanical and electrical engineering, industrial design, device safety, compliance, validation, and certification. Our R&D presence in China enables us to develop strategic partnerships in a region that is home to around 90% of the world’s smokeless device suppliers.
